  • iPod Touch ships without OS X, hints at secrets of the hardware.

So the first bit of interesting news is that iPod Touches seem to be shipping, despite my Apple store telling me the ship date is the 28th. Yesterday I saw unboxing images on flickr, from one picked up at an Apple store in the midwest, and now we have news of one hitting he hands of Dave, a preorder customer, but it seems his was not quite ready for prime time.

Dav’s iPod Touch was shipped without OS X. In fact it seems to turn on at all only because it still has the diagnostic software loaded.

humorously the diagnostic screen’s icon for the serial number is a cereal box of Cheerios, very amusing Apple. But most interestingly is the Bluetooth icon. It clearly shows bluetooth is disabled but… does that mean the hardware is actually in the device? Some are speculating yes, and its just a matter of Apple sending through a software push to activate it.

My first thought is the bluetooth icon isn’t a big deal, it’s probably just the same diagnostic software the iPhone uses. But no, if that were the case we’d see a GSM radio icon and a lil X next to it too, wouldn’t we? My next thought is I think we know for a fact that bluetooth wireless was part of the original design for the touch, and was pulled for some reason. Perhaps they just didn’t bother to update the diagnostic tool, after they pulled the hardware.

Of course I am not so secretly hoping that the bluetooth chip is part of the same hardware wireless circuit boards. If it is, then its juts a matter of time before Apple, or the hacker/development community turns it on. If we can have Bluetooth connectivity in the iPod touch the dream of being able to use my Verizon EVDO connection through my phone is a real possibility, as well as being able to make and take phone calls from the iPod touch over the verizon network with just a dumb phone in my pocket. Can you say iPhone for CDMA networks? mmmmm

I’m 90% sure the hardware won’t be in there, but I am now waiting for the first brave sole to disassemble one of these. I am very curious to see what actual physical hardware is in one of these.

Oh and Dave, don’t you dare return that iPod to Apple. That unit could be worth a small fortune on eBay, or you could even donate it to the iPhone/iPod Touch developers (they’d probably at least refund your money, or swap it for a regular one.) I’m sure that development version that you have is a wealth of information to the right people.
