So, this page caught my eye when I was reading People Magazine. This couple right here is Allen & Violet Large.Allen is 75 & Violet is 78. They met in 1964. Ever since 1983, they have purchased two lottery tickets every week. Last year, Violet called the lottery hotline to check out the winning numbers, & turns out they won. They won $11.2 million dollars. & guess what they did with it? They donated it all to doctors, their own country, family. & kept none for themselves.
They say they are content with their ‘87 Dodge Diplomat Suburban & their 148 year old Victorian home,
Here’s a quote from Violet near the end:
” Money can’t buy happiness.” ” We have everything we need; I have Allen and he has me.”

  • Be grumpy & give up hope, it will make you a better person

The BBC is reporting on an study by Australian psychology expert (didn’t take time to become an actual psychologist did ya?) that claims being grumpy helps you think more clearly.

Feeling grumpy ‘is good for you’

The theory is a grumpy person is better able to make good decisions and easily cope with demanding situations because being grumpy “promotes information processing strategies.”

Thanks to twitter friend @shotbykim for that interesting bit of news.

Meanwhile in a related story from the Daily Telegraph, giving up hope may make you happier.

Researchers find ‘dark side of hope’

A borderline “evil” study by the University of Michigan was conducted on people who had their colons removed. Half of them were told that the processes was reversible and they wouldn’t need a colostomy bag the rest of their life. The other half were told the situation was permanent.

It turns out the the people who gave up hope or perceived there was no hope got on with their lives and were generally happier about it, while the ones that thought there was hope were completely miserable about being saddled with a colostomy bag.

Thanks to twitter friend @chumprock for this uplifting news.

So what can we learn from all this?

Clearly if we give up hope we’ll be happier, but more confused. But if you hold out hope you will be grumpy and thus will make better decisions and think clearer…

Either way it sort of goes against what we were taught in Sunday school. ;-)
